The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service tests chickens for salmonella contamination in broiler plants.

Before July 2011, the government published the name of a plant only if more than 10 percent of its chickens tested positive for salmonella. Beginning in July 2011, the government began naming plants only if more than 7.5 percent of their chickens tested positive for salmonella.

This map shows the location of plants that had contamination levels higher than 10 percent (yellow markers) and higher than 20 percent (red markers) in at least one set of government tests. The test results were published by FSIS between March 2008 and April 2011. Click on the marker to see information about each plant.
